"It's My Pleasure": RT Serves at Senator Vogel's Sr. Expo
by Cassidy Twentier, junior RT student
On Friday September 20th of 2019, Lawrence County’s Career and Technical Center Restaurant Trades went to Senator Vogel’s Senior Expo. Senator Vogel holds this expo every year for people 55 years and older. Each year about 600 to 700 senior citizens come to this even where there are several booths varying anywhere from veterans affairs and public transportation to even flu shots -- all topics important to our county’s seniors.
For the past few years, LCCTC’s Restaurant Trades students have helped serve breakfast and lunch at the event; this year was no different. Students greet the seniors and help them to their seats, hand out donuts and coffee for breakfast. When it’s time for lunch, the RT students make sure that the food is served with a smile and kindness.
Maya Young said that one of the most enjoyable parts of this day of service is, “I liked that I got to meet new people.”
Though it is a valuable lesson in customer satisfaction, “just serving in general and helping others,” is one of the benefits that Danny Heaney realized after the Expo.
I just liked seeing people happy, “ stated K’Asia Walker, “and seeing a smile on their faces -- Well, it brought a smile to my face.”
This event brought people together. It not only helped the senior citizens by having booths to give information but it also provided a venue to show them that the youth of this community does have a future -- a good future. It gave the Restaurant Trades students experience with serving people through service.
Once again, this year’s Senior Expo was a success and reminded people that there is kindness.
