Co-op Spotlight: Dominic Phillips

School doesn’t have to be all about “sit down, read the textbook, answer the questions, and take the test.” For Electrical Occupations senior Dominic Phillips, this traditional type of learning didn’t sit as well with him. Though Dominic was typically a pretty successful student, the opportunity to learn with his hands was more appealing.

He now takes that drive to succeed in the classroom and theory room to a higher level — on the job through the Co-op program at LCCTC.

“LCCTC prepared me to handle a variety of situations I encounter every day at work,” says Dominic. “This job is far from sitting in a classroom desk, but the soft-skill preparation I gained in theory and in many academic classrooms is helping me daily on the job.”

In addition to running parts, Dominic also installs hot water tanks at Central Plumbing and Heating. On his job, he really enjoys meeting different customers; he also enjoys the ability to put his Electrical Occupation skills to the test as he learns in the field.

What is Cooperative Education?

  • Cooperative Education enables students who are eligible to receive training from an employer in place of attending the Career Center.

  • Co-op combines academics with occupational experience enabling students to learn and earn on the job.

  • The Cooperative Education Coordinator works together with the student, their instructor, and the employer to set up a placement.
