LCCTC Benefits from Grant for Weekend Meals

At the end of the day, Mr. Leonard Rich, Director of the LCCTC gladly took the mic and announced,

“Any student wishing to take home a bag with two breakfasts and two lunches over the weekend for you and your siblings can pick them up in the front lobby on their way home today!”

Wait — what? You heard it right! Every student at LCCTC can count on breakfasts and lunches for each day of the week! That’s right — for our students AND their siblings for Saturday AND Sunday, too — no questions asked.

It’s hard to concentrate on schoolwork when your belly is telling you it’s hungry; to counter that inner voice, Jason Williams, Food Service Director with the Nutrition Group, tells us, “Our kids will now be able to enjoy safe, healthy, and nutritious foods so that they are fed and ready to learn during the week and on the weekends!”

Initially a summer meal program at the home schools, LCCTC is now able to join in to continue serving free meals to all children for each day of the week well into the fall months. According to the USDA, this unprecedented move ensures that “no matter what the situation is on-the-ground – children have access to nutritious food as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.” This program will extend to December 31st and well-beyond, as long as funding lasts.

Mr. Williams and the LCCTC Cafeteria Crew prepare the bags filled with two breakfasts and two lunches per person. Key items were frozen for safe traveling until the students return home on Friday evenings. Students are encouraged to take a bag for every child living in their home and one for themselves if they wish.

Bags may contain cereal or cereal bars or some other ready-to-go breakfast food with milk to round off the meal; for lunch, kids might take home ham and cheese to make a sandwich, a meatball sub, or a roni roll with a side of vegetable and fruit.

We’d like to thank those who extended the program, Mr. Rich and Mr. Williams for coordinating the logistics to make this happen, and LCCTC’s lunch ladies for lovingly packing and distributing each bag to students for their travels home.

Bon appétit
