DAY 1 & 2: SkillsUSA Travel by Train to DC and then -- Atlanta!
Nine Lawrence County Career and Technical Students safely traveled by train (How cool is that?!) from the downtown Pittsburgh station through to Union Station in our nation’s capital and finally — on to Atlanta to compete in the National SkillsUSA Championships!
Though they quickly learned about the patience needed to survive delays, travel by train was pretty exciting! Meandering from town to town, the kids soon learned to sit back and enjoy the comfortable seats and journey off-the-beaten path through the Appalachian mountains.
Finally arriving at the beautifully stunning Union Station, the kids grabbed a quick bite to eat, made their way up the escalators through the incredible golden ceiling of the station, and out into the bright, sunny day. It was just a few hot, humid-filled city blocks to the capital. There, they snapped a few pictures of the building where our nation’s legislative branch of government serves its people and took a quick peek of the Washington Monument that, on a map, looks a lot closer than it actually is.
With plans to return to DC and spend more time another time, the kids returned for the final 12 hours of their trip. Technically, with an additional two-hour layover, it was 14 hours, but at least they had their new friendships, the excitement of the week to come, and a travel mall full of shops to visit to keep themselves entertained. After all — they were now traveling on a literal “Midnight Train to Georgia” — Whooot Wooooo!!
Next stop — Atlanta!
