Cosmetology Sophomore Attends Hair Show

By Kimberlyn Libengood, Cosmetology Class of 2025

Sophomore Kimberlyn Libengood pretty much grew up in a salon, so when it was time for her to begin her formal training, there was no other choice of a shop than Cosmetology! When she found out that there was a professional hair show in Columbus, Ohio, she jumped at the opportunity! When she returned, she was eager to share her experiences with her class. Here is a transcript of her presentation:

This was the first year that I was allowed to attend the Premiere Beauty Classic Hair Show with my mom.

Ever since I was a little girl, I couldn’t wait until the day that it was my turn to become a cosmetologist. My great-grandmother had her own salon in her house, and my mother took up teaching cosmetology for the majority of her career alongside managing a salon in Chippewa. She now has her own salon inspired by God “Claddagh Beauty Bar and Salon” which means “love, loyalty, and friendship.”

My sister Gabrielle took up our family tradition and followed in the footsteps of our mother. She is currently a cosmetology educator and works in the salon on the weekends. When my sister went to beauty school before me, I was super upset and wouldn’t speak to her for a few weeks. After all, “it was my idea first to go to cosmetology school.”

As I began to get older, for a hot minute, I had other thoughts of doing something else with my life; however, once I set my heart on attending LCCTC, I knew that I had to make a decision on which career path to take, and didn’t want to choose poorly.

My mom told me to pray for direction and one night, I had a dream that God told me to choose cosmetology. The next morning, I felt confident in my direction, and I refocused my attention on my original dream.

Today, I am in a great season in my life, learning this amazing field of cosmetology with a true mentor, Ms. Jones. I plan on having an open mind and taking in as much as possible to receive all that she has to offer us in knowledge.

Convinced that my career choice was right for me, I must say that attending the hair show was pretty amazing. I got to see that this career is for the passionate at heart, “the dreamers” and the artists not of a traditional framed canvas but of a canvas of hair, skin, and nails. There were so many classes to choose from and so much to see and learn.

I sat in classes on hair loss with Malibu scalp and hair treatment products, and hair shaping with a famous stylist who has a platform on Instagram, Facebook, and every level of social media you can think of. I had the opportunity to watch henna brows, nail sculpting, facials, microblading, and color techniques.

Because of my experience, I now understand that there’s a lot for me to learn, and I’m excited to begin my journey at LCCTC. I also got my first pair of shears and thinning shears at the show and I cannot wait for the opportunity to use them. I would recommend to every fellow student stylist to attend a hair show. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to go.

One thing that stood out to me was the love that was in the showcase room of fellow stylists. People would randomly come up and compliment you. No competition. Just love. I hope that we all take these ideals into our classroom at LCCTC. It’s all for the betterment of our shop and our skills.

Working in the beauty industry is scary and exciting all in one because we just want to do a good job and make others feel good about themselves. After all, that’s why we are here right?

Thank you Ms. Jones for the opportunity to share about the hair show, and thank you for pouring out your love and support into all of us. We are grateful to have you as our educator.
