SWPBS: Trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo

by Mackenzie Bollinger, Cosmetology Class of 2025

The School-Wide Positive Behavior Support trip or SWPBS trip took place on Tuesday, October 31st.  Because of their outstanding behavior and good attendance, 40 LCCTC students took advantage of the opportunity to spend the day at the Pittsburgh Zoo.

SWPBS is a program we have here at the LCCTC where students who haven’t received any discipline referrals for the semester have the opportunity to be rewarded for their behavior by going on fun trips or doing fun activities here at the school.

It was a day to learn while they had fun; during the trip, students learned about different animals, different cultures, and how to preserve nature. This was the first time the LCCTC took a trip like this, and we’ve heard a lot of positive feedback from the students.

Shane Grannis, a Veterinary Assistant student stated,  “Getting to see the animals being fed was interesting.”

Ariadna Cotto, one of our Veterinary Assistant ESL students who came to us from Puerto Rico, really enjoyed her trip.  “It was the first time I’ve ever been to a zoo.  It was wonderful to see all of the animals up close and not in a picture book.”  She grinned, saying, “The baby kangaroo, the joey, was my favorite!”

Thank you, Mrs. Heasley and the SWPBS team for planning and promoting this trip and allowing opportunity for our students to go to the Pittsburgh Zoo.
