February's Pride & Promise Winner: Berner International

by Elia McKnight, Electrical Occupations senior (Laurel)

With the arrival of February, the Lawrence County CTC Joint Operating Committee made of members from each school district in the county gladly recognized the recipient of the Pride and Promise Award.  Choosing an awardee may sometimes be difficult, but this month’s decision was a no-brainer.  Berner International was invited to attend the most recent board meeting when representatives received a certificate recognizing their generous fostering of our students.  Last month, Berner donated a high-tech air curtain - their specialty product - to our Electrical Occupations shop class.

At the board meeting, representatives from Berner were introduced to the board and given a formal welcome.  Mr. Rich and Principal Caiazza graciously spoke about Berner’s contribution and invited the group to the front of the room to receive their Pride and Promise certificate.

Also present for the meeting were EO Instructor Pete Montini and EO senior Elia Rae McKnight, both of whom shared a few words of thanks to Berner International and the board.

“Because of the culture established with the blessings of the home schools, encouraged by our administration, and nurtured by our instructors and teachers here at Lawrence County CTC,” states McKnight, “I have been able to grow as a person, discovering what I love.  Opportunities to build my skills in the Electrical Occupations program and to lead in organizations like Student Council, Peer Leadership, and SkillsUSA have made me comfortable with my abilities and confident in my own skin.”

McKnight continued to thank the JOC, stating, “You are the reason our school is thriving; thank you so much for the opportunities that have changed my life.”

Once a photo was taken to mark the occasion, the representatives of Berner International, Mr. Montini, and Ms. McKnight ventured to the EO shop classroom to demonstrate the air curtain, assembled by EO senior Walter McKnight, brother to Elia.

Now able to work on this piece of equipment, EO students have the chance to apply real-world electrical experience to a classroom setting - an opportunity that might stretch the constraints of a typical budget.  However, thanks to the generosity of Berner International, our students able to experience a broader understanding of hands-on fieldwork and to develop an expanded view of this particular vocational horizon.

Once again, thank you Berner International for being an encouragement to our kids!  LCCTC - We are proud and we are rising!
