Marvelous Mullet Mania!
Maybe it was magical. Maybe it was marvelous. Maybe even magnificent! At the end-of-the-day assembly on March 31st, the first-ever March Mullet Madness contest winner had been decided.
At first, the advisors wondered, “Would the student body embrace a mullet contest to see who had the best “business in the front” hairstyle?” This idea for the contest first began at the Holiday Dance when the advisors noticed the fun-loving nature of a group of students dancing and having a great time; they all seemed to have a somewhat familiar hairstyle from the 80’s. “We have the most stunning array of stunning mullets that I have ever seen,” exclaimed Mrs. Vanasco, addressing the student body at the assembly. “There’s no way we can’t show off these majestic masterpieces!”
At first, there was hesitation from those sporting their half-a-haircuts to put themselves out there and join in — keeping their own merry mullets mysterious, but soon, the competition heated up as they were either volunteered or were “motivated” — sponsored by teachers to enter the competition. There was even one generous anonymous donor, eager to sponsor some mullets!
Soon — the competition was in full swing with posters supporting the event and social media posts bringing to light the latest bit of fun at the LCCTC. Construction Trades, Cosmetology, and Machine Tool Technology collaborated to create a hand-crafted trophy and student Council decorated canisters for all of the contestants. In the final two weeks leading up to the final day of the contest, Student Council members brought the canisters to lunch for two weeks, and during lunch periods, LCCTC students donated money to support their favorite mullet! Students emptied their wallets, cleaned out their change jars, and turned out their pockets — every penny counted. At one time, there was a $40 in change to be rolled!
This fundraiser has been a lot of fun, but in reality, it was all done to raise funds for the Carter Huzinec Memorial Scholarship. Carter, the son of Chrissi Huzinec, Michael Huzinec, was a 2018 graduate of the CTC and studied Construction Trades. Carter passed from injuries sustained from an ATV accident in May 2020. Proceeds from March Mullet Madness, sponsored by Student Council, are being donated to the scholarship in memory of Carter and his “fun-loving spirit”. This scholarship has been established to help LCCTC seniors further their careers; we’d like to think that Carter would truly enjoy both the fun-loving nature of a contest like this and the fact that it will help another LCCTC graduate begin their life in a skilled trade.
So now — on the final day of the month which marked the final day of the contest, everyone wondered — who could claim this witty win?
In second place, from Shenango, Welding sophomore, Brady Parker!
And in first place, winner of the first, ever March Mullet Madness title, from Union, Veterinary Assistant junior — Maccie Jones!
Congratulations to all who participated — you helped raise over $200 toward the Carter Huzinec Scholarship. Great job Student Council. Not only did we all have a lot of fun, but we were also able to honor the memory of a fun-loving graduate.
