Shop With a Cop: Giving Back with a Purpose
by Jay Leddon, Management and Information Systems ~ Class of 2025
On January 23, our SkillsUSA members packed into the school van for a special trip — a yearly event that combines shopping, community service, and support for our fellow students. Wait, wasn’t it a school day? Absolutely, but this day was different. It was time for our annual Shop With a Cop trip for the Eagle’s Nest Boutique at LCCTC!
What is Shop With a Cop?
Before hitting the stores, an inventory was taken, and it was decided what items were most needed. SkillsUSA members then headed out to buy the essentials: winter coats, gloves, interview attire like ties and belts, and even socks, dress shirts, and jeans. The goal? To stock the Eagle’s Nest Boutique with the clothing students need for school, dances, and job interviews.
The boutique is a lifeline for students who might need something special for an upcoming event, or simply a new piece of clothing to wear to school. If the boutique doesn’t have what they need, we’ll find it for them because every student deserves the opportunity to look and feel their best.
Community Support and Teamwork
LCCTC’s SRO Corporal Fabian, who joined us on the trip, said it best: “The trip was excellent; our kids were very well-behaved and excited to shop. The store workers were very complimentary and were happy to support the program.” It was clear that the excitement wasn’t just from the students — the store workers were eager to be part of such a meaningful cause.
The Eagle’s Nest Boutique isn’t just about clothes; it’s about providing our students with the confidence and dignity they need to succeed. Alongside the boutique, the Peer Leadership Linen Closet ensures that students can also access personal hygiene products and other necessities, making sure everyone’s basic needs are met.
Reflections from Our SkillsUSA Members
Makayla Fischer shared her thoughts on the trip: “It was a fun day. I really enjoyed helping people. I help out at the food bank when I can, so going shopping to help my peers have something nice to wear was a special treat!” Makayla’s words highlight the spirit of giving that defines this event — it’s about more than just shopping; it’s about showing kindness and empathy to those who may need a little extra help.
Gabby Schiek also reflected on the experience, saying, “It feels great to have helped in this way. We hope that kids enjoy the gifts from Shop With a Cop. The items don’t have to be high fashion or anything. They just need to be something that’s quality and something that you know is going to last. I liked helping make sure that what we did buy would be something the kids might like, too.”
A Lasting Impact
At LCCTC, we’re not just focused on academics and skills; we’re committed to fostering a sense of community and helping each other succeed. Whether it’s through the Eagle’s Nest Boutique or the Peer Leadership Linen Closet, we aim to provide our students with the support they need to thrive.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in making Shop With a Cop such a success, and a special shoutout to our SkillsUSA students for giving their time and energy to help their peers. Together, we’re making a difference — one item of clothing at a time.
We would like to share a big thanks to the New Castle Police Department and the FOP Lodge 21 for their generosity. Please know that your efforts to serve your community through Shop with a Cop DO make a difference — especially in the lives of our students at LCCTC.
