Graduate Spotlight: Abbey Smiley

It is an understatement to say that Abbey always kept busy. An International All-Star competitive cheerleader, her enthusiasm spilled into every activity she took on. She showed great leadership as President of the Lawrence County Chapter of SkillsUSA Opening and Closing Team. When it came to her post-secondary plans, there was little doubt what direction she would take after graduating from LCCTC’s Health Assistant Program in 2015.

For the next four years, Abbey made Carlow University her home. While taking her undergraduate nursing courses, she worked through the tutoring center at Carlow assisting as a tutor for a few nursing classes, at Carlow School Campus doing a work study alongside one-year-olds, and as an advanced patient care technician at Magee Woman’s Hospital of UPMC — all the while maintaining excellent grades, even landing on Dean’s List!

On May 11th, 2019 Abbey graduated from Carlow University with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN, BSN), and in July she passed her boards for National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses allowing her to work on the medical surgical unit at UPMC Presbyterian Montifiore.

There’s no stopping this girl! This fall, Abbey applied and was accepted to Carlow University’s Graduate Program and is currently working toward her Masters in Science and Nursing for Leadership/Education. Her goal is to one day teach nursing students in a graduate program.

We look forward to seeing what tomorrow has for Abbey.
