Lifetime Sports: Annual Fishing Trip!

by Brianna Hernandez and Kya Locke, RT juniors

It was the end-of-the-day announcements, and Mrs. Kegel’s friendly voice came on to us about the next day’s breakfast . . . and giving us her traditional, “Goodnight, school!” blessing. . . and . . . WAIT! . . . Did you hear what she just said?  . . . Could it be? . . . is it true? . . . Did she just talk about a field trip?? . . . A fishing field trip?  . . . a Friday FISHING FIELD TRIP?  FINALLY!

On Friday, April 30th, twenty-three students and gym teacher Mr. Simon, traveled to Cascade Park where they took the day to enjoy a lifetime sport:  Fishing.  Just a twenty minute walk from LCCTC -- one mile away, the anxious anglers arrived at their destination, hopeful to net the biggest fish of the day!

Once there, Mr. Simon put the coals on the grill and kept a watchful eye on the kids.  During the day, they all had lots of different foods to enjoy:  roasted hot dogs, grilled burgers, chips, and drinks.

Steven Graham’s reason was simple: “I love fishing.”

Katelynn Kerr said “I just wanted to get some fresh air away from a computer.” In the end, regardless of no one catching anything on the fishing trip, everyone had a fun day out in nature.

Although few were able to return with a fish, Maylene Ritter was able to hook two bass. A few others nabbed a fish or two, as well.

Despite many failed attempts, students still had fun getting out of school, eating, and spending the day outdoors.

And although the sunny warmth of the morning turned into a chilly, windy, rainy day by the afternoon, all would love to return -- even better, to go to a different spot next year . . . with the hopes of netting the “one that got away.”
