Disney Makeup and Hair Show

by Alexis Koelliker, Cosmetology junior

Wands waved on Wednesday May 26th as Cosmetology juniors and seniors hosted a hair and makeup show.  When Mrs. Jones, Cosmetology Instructor first proposed the idea, the juniors and seniors of B Week were simply brimming with excitement.  The resulting theme:  LCCTC’s own Disney-inspired bibbity-bobbity-boutique of characters!

Once the theme was decided, they rushed to the Web for inspiration. The students, inspired by a Disney character, were asked to pick a model and perform skills they’ve learned throughout the year; the trick: To perform ALL tasks — not before the stroke of midnight — but before the final ring of academic lunch bell.

On the morning of the hair show, it was all smiles.  Consultations and conversations amongst the students inspired even more creativity, and there wasn’t a glum face in the room.

Because Savannah Young, (SHS) senior, represented her shop the previous year in SkillsUSA district competition, she had a little insight for this event: “This hair show was a fun, creative experience!”

“It was great to try something new!”  agreed Arianna Mitteff.

Up until the final minute, students rushed to put on their final touches on their models before the lunch bell rang proving that quality work takes time.

That afternoon, teachers judged the finished styled models through Google Form. It was certainly a difficult pick.

In the end, every participant seemed pleased with the outcome -- both models and artists!  The anticipation was high in the Cosmo theory room, and finally -- it was time:  “Congratulations  to the following who placed in the top three . . .”

THIRD PLACE: “Reading Belle” from Beauty and the Beast:  model Ell McKnight (EO) and artist Maylene Ritter

SECOND PLACE: “Alfalfa” from The Little Rascals:  model Ian Stoneking (HA) and artist Braden McCombs

FIRST PLACE:  “Maleficent” from Sleeping Beauty:  model Hailee Stull (VA) and artist Jessica Fair

Cheers of joy erupted as each finalist was congratulated because — though it was a competition, in the end, the Cosmetology shop is “family,” and support each other in all efforts.

“I was SO excited to take my love of Disney and showcase it through my students’ eyes,”  Cosmetology Instructor Mrs. Jaime Jones enthusiastically states.  “I was impressed with their creativity, and a lot of them expressed to me how much fun they had. They are looking forward to more projects like this one!”

This show was a great way to show off the talent and teaching within our Cosmetology shop, and we hope to make this an annual event!
