STEAM Comes to LCCTC

For the 2020-2021 school year, LCCTC introduced a new course for seniors who had outstanding academic and vocational skills along with those who had passed their Keystone tests. Twenty-two students worked in-person and virtually on robotics including Sphero, LEGO Spike, LEGO Mindstorm, and VEX throughout the year.

At the end of the year, seven individuals of the STEAM courses were able to build and construct, in-person, the VEX Clawbot robots, the advanced and final project in the course. Students not only had to build and construct the VEX robots; they also had to begin the programming process. These skills will surely continue to develop at the CTC.

With this in mind, we will expand the STEAM opportunity to more students as we will have two corresponding courses of STEAM, filling electives in both science and mathematics. Additionally, three staff members in a variety of disciplines will be able to teach, assist, and guide the students through the courses.

In general, STEAM will always be a good opportunity for students to grasp because, in one way or another, science, technology, engineering, arts and math are used in everyday activities. STEAM learning promotes problem solving and creative and analytical thinking. LCCTC is now part of that opportunity and will continue to broaden the scope of opportunities in the academic and vocational field ensuring that our students are college and career-ready!
