Learning to Embrace Culture

by Tejionna Summers, sophomore cosmetology, Ellwood City

Cosmetology students from the Class of 2024 took the day to get the feel of Mehndi, also known as henna. This temporary skin dye gets its name from the henna plant and is used by people from warmer climates like the Indian subcontinent, Africa, and the Middle East.

Students first watched videos of henna artists applying the intricate patterns and designs for events like weddings and festivals. The proper application of henna can be a bit tricky, at first, but with a little practice and patience, the students quickly caught on.

It seemed like the skeleton hand was a popular design to practice, but most stayed to traditional styles.

Few knew about henna design, but by the time the lesson was over, LCCTC’s Cosmetology students were energized to learn this fascinating art! Learning to embrace the traditions of different cultures is not only fun; it helps make our students even more employable.
