Welding Senior Uses Skills for a Smashing Success!

Congratulations to senior Welding student, Hunter Biddle of Ellwood City! He competed in the full-size motor Demolition Derby at the Great Stoneboro Fair over the Labor Day Weekend and brought home the winning trophy in his age division!

In order to prepare for this derby, Hunter needed to make sure he was following all safety protocols — well . . . as many as he could, considering he was getting ready to smash and crash into other V8 engines! Removing the glass and interior were first on his to-do list, but most importantly, he needed to relocate the gas tank and battery to avoid serious safety issues. Then, Hunter put his welding skills to work as he framed patches and tacked welds to make sure the car was sturdy enough to withstand the hits from other 17 & 18-year-olds who were hungry to be the last one running.

For the past 4 years, Hunter has been competing in derbies “My family and I are always in the garage. They cheer me on. I appreciate them so much for all they do to support this crazy hobby!”

Hunter also appreciates his sponsors for their donations and deals. These sponsors include Chase’s Auto Salvage, Smith Metal Works, CJ Rombold Engine Builders, Fred’s Transmissions, and Noto Custom Welding. Special thanks goes to Team Rad05 for all of the tips and tricks and for helping us along the way.

In the future, Hunter plans enjoy his gigantic trophy, reinvest his first-place check into the next car, and plan his next run with the "big boys” in the adult division!

Good Luck, Hunter — and BE CAREFUL!
