What's New in Restaurant Trades?

by Tommiann Fuge, Restaurant Trades sophomore from New Castle

If you step through the doors of the Restaurant Trades shop, you’ll soon see a few new renovations to its dining room. These changes occurred over the summer and, as the LCCTC staff and students returned to the school, these improvements have stirred up a lot of excitement.

There are new dining room floors, freshly-painted walls, and newly-installed lighting and fans. The dining area also features new wooden tables and chairs that allow for versatility in seating arrangement.

The front of the house isn't the only area with improvements; however, the “back of the house”, the kitchen, features a new stove and oven.  These pieces of equipment allow students to bake with better accuracy in temperature and offer students the opportunity to use more modern appliances.

“I am very excited about these renovations,” states Ms. Price, the Culinary Arts Instructor, “and I am looking forward to opening up our dining room to eager diners soon!”

Between a class of eager sophomores new to the restaurant trades as well as senior student helpers and a class of enthusiastic veteran juniors and seniors, they all feel lucky to be able to learn in a new, updated, clean environment.

A few student helpers all agree that they prefer the new tables and chairs over the booths they had in the previous few years.  Jaime Goebel, a student assistant from Ellwood, states, “The new items in our restaurant are a big improvement and a lovely addition to our shop.”

Ciara Schultz, a second-year junior from Mohawk, also expressed fondness of the new additions  “I like the new restaurant theory room; it is easy to go from theory to formal dining room with just a few adjustments.”

There is also a new coat rack in the entryway, and this rack is on no ordinary coat rack; it was hand-crafted from 100-year-old barn wood!  Alexis Clingensmith, a second-year junior from Union, feels a special connection to the improvements in the dining room.  “My father made the coat rack, and I helped to install it!”  Each time she enters the dining/theory room, she’ll think of those moments spent with family who stepped up to help.

As a first-year Restaurant trades student myself, I enjoy the work put into how our dining area looks as well as our kitchen.  I also enjoy being able to learn my trade with brand-new equipment.

Miss Price as well as the people installing the new additions have done a fantastic job making our dining area look more like a professional restaurant. My class is very grateful to the maintenance staff who took time out of their summers to help install these new wonderful additions.

I believe my class can make people feel as though we are a restaurant and that we can work together as one in a beautiful atmosphere.
