Student Council Completes First-ever Leadership Symposium

Let’s be honest.  Nobody wants to sit in a meeting all day.  That’s what ninety-nine percent of LCCTCs Student Council members thought when they found out about this year's first Student Council Symposium.  However, as an attendee of this meeting, I can assure you that our students had a blast thanks to Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Caiazza, and Ms. Cozza, all of whom are evidently specialized in making any situation fun, yet still productive!

This spring, Student Council members and officers reported to the library for the meeting, not knowing what to expect.  We were all pleasantly surprised to find games and donuts awaiting us.  To kick off the meeting, the members played an ice breaker game over breakfast, during which we got to know each other much better.  Once we had our fill of “Would You Rather?”, Leadership Career Artifact forms were handed out and completed sporadically throughout the day.  The artifact had four main points following a group discussion about leadership: what are the main traits of a good leader?  The points that followed, Confidence, Self-Awareness, Integrity, and Communication, generally answered this question with each keyword containing one or two challenge games for students to complete.

Likely our most rigorous challenge pertaining to Communication required kids to form two teams, one with all team “A” members standing in the hallway with their feet planted trying to block the team “B”, which sent two team members at a time.  One of these team “B” members fumbled through the array of students to the end of the hallway, and to make it difficult, this adventurer was blindfolded with a helper guiding them using only words.  This game stresses communication and teamwork, like many of the others.

All in all, these challenges, discussions, and tests strengthened not only bonds and built new friendships, but strengthened each individual involved in Student Council.  After what we can call a very successful meeting, we hope to make this an annual event with new, ambitious faces as well.
