Thank You for Your Visit Rep Brown . . . And Come Back Soon!

by Gabrielle Treece, Veterinary Assistant, Class of 2024

Hello, World!

On November 8, 2023,  LCCTC’s Director, Mr. Leonard Rich met with State Representative Marla Brown to provide her with a tour of the school. Senior members of the SkillsUSA Opening and Closing Team greeted her and were invited to participate.  Students and teachers were patiently anticipating her arrival at the chance to show off our school!

When she came, we were prepared; Commercial Arts designed a large banner that was hung right above the front office to offer Rep. Brown a warm welcome, Restaurant Trades prepared sweet treats for the event and made sure they packed take-home boxes of a delicious turkey dinner with all of the fixings prepared by the students. and the rest of the shops did everything they could to make sure they were in tip-top condition.

The tour began in the front lobby where Rep. Brown saw the Principal’s 200 Club wall, a place where School Wide Positive Behavior ticket-winning students enter for a drawing once a row has been completed.  We then moved to the academic hallway where Rep. Brown engaged with the students in a science class; it was easy to see that, even in the academic classes, LCCTC students love their school!

After a turn back down toward the front office area, the tour stopped to see the recognition we give to alumni and students including a wall that honors previous students and faculty who have served in the armed forces, a wall that honors the elite seniors who have jumped head-first into the world of work through co-op, a case to display pictures and achievements of the FFA members and SkillsUSA organizations, and the plaques that commemorate those alumni and staff members into LCCTC’s Hall of Fame.

In the vocational wing, Marla witnessed how each program prepares our students for the world of work. Representative Brown marveled at all that can be accomplished through career and technical education and was quite impressed with the level of skill our students have already accomplished at such a young age.  In each shop, she engaged with the students who were eager to share their love of their trade.  The members of the Opening and Closing Team were impressive as they answered questions about the technical and personal skills acquired at the CTC.

Chief of Staff, Jen Bush was in awe of the poise and accomplishments of our students who spoke so well with such passion and at how determined we are to succeed in our various shops and through our work with SkillsUSA.

The tour ended in Restaurant Trades where, after the steep hike around the school, we enjoyed a few moments to answer questions about our future plans! We felt that Rep. Brown truly cared about what we had to say.

In all, I think the most enjoyable part of it all was feeling how much Rep. Brown met us on a personal level.  We were quite thankful to show off our wonderful school and to distinguish it from regular high schools.  An education in CTE isn’t for everyone, but it is for us and so many like us, and for that opportunity – we are grateful.  By giving this tour, we were able to represent what it is to be a ‘soaring eagle’ at LCCTC.

Thank you for your visit Representative Marla Brown, and come back, soon!
